The Roadhouse, Manchester 05.03.07

Gig rating: ****/5.

Still a relatively new band, The Hussy's already have numerous guitar-pop classics to cram into their set. It must be tough whittling them down to thirty-minutes, although it can't go far wrong whichever tunes are placed where. We Expected seems to be a regular opener, and was again tonight, Fili's powerful vocals resonating around The Roadhouse and drawing immediate attention to the stage. If that didn't wake the lifeless, it's barely thirty seconds before the band add more hook-filled rocket-fuel and launch into chorus one. The Hussy's manage to sound cheerful and wistful at the same time, and this is perfect pop; more edgy than sugary and with enough variation between songs to keep your attention, as if the hooks alone weren't enough. Despite never hearing new song Please Don't Call Me before, I still find myself singing along by the second chorus.

The only disappointment for me was the set ending on I Still Love You Even Though You're Not Jesus, it's by no means a bad song, but for me it was the only tune tonight that wouldn't have worked as a set-closer. Oh, and I'd love to hear Snowboard live too.

The Hussy's are one of the best bands bands around at the moment, and it can't be too soon before I see them again...
